Invisalign Tips You Need to Know

It’s no secret. Over the past couple of years, the dental industry has grown dramatically with the help of advanced technology.

Let’s take teeth alignment for example. While everyone in the 90’s was fretting over thick, metal braces – millennials were born into an era when Invisalign was invented.

Invented in 1997, Invisalign has become the latest craze in the dental industry. Because this custom-fabricated invisible retainer doesn’t get in the way of your appearance, this device has become extremely popular among young adults.

Whether you’re an Invisalign user or thinking about switching to it, here are some helpful Invisalign tips to make the most out of your experience!

Want to optimise your experience when using Invisalign? Here are some suggestions to help guide you towards a healthier, more beautiful smile.

1. Water Should Be Your Only Drink

This had to be the first on our list of Invisalign tips.

One of the worst mistakes you can make is drinking anything other than water when wearing Invisalign.

Not only do sugary drinks have the ability to decay your teeth while on this treatment, but drinking soda, coffee, and tea will stain your aligners over time.

Some orthodontists will even recommend taking the aligners off while drinking water. Be sure to contact a professional and see what is recommended.

2. Brushing Your Teeth Is Equally as Important

We know. If you’re currently using Invisalign, it feels like you’re dealing with your real teeth. And even though this is convenient, a lot of patients forget that they still have to perform proper maintenance.

One of the most important Invisalign tips that we strongly suggest is that after every meal you brush your teeth as normal. This helps eliminate any food particles that can possibly cause decay.

In addition to brushing, rinsing and flossing your teeth are equally as important.

3. Chewy Things Are Going to Be Your Friend

If you’ve been using Invisalign, you should already know how helpful chewies are for you.

Orthodontists who have recommended these teeth aligners always talk about the benefits of foods like sugar-free chewing gum. They not only help clean teeth after your meal, but they are great when it comes to keeping the aligners in place.

4. Use for 20-22 Hours Daily

One of the great benefits of Invisalign is the privilege of taking them off whenever you would like. And even though this is a benefit that you are unable to do with braces, it’s important that you keep them on for 20-22 hours in the day.

The 2-4 hours of freedom you have not wearing Invisalign should be used for eating, drinking, flossing, and brushing. As tempting as it may sound, you shouldn’t have your device for more than 2-4 hours in the day. A lot of patients prolong their treatment.

5. Always Hold on to Your Old Aligners

One of the most helpful Invisalign tips we can advise is keeping your previous set of aligners. Just like eyeglasses, there’s a possibility that the new set of aligners can break.

To prevent a prolonged treatment time if this ever happens, you’re able to use your last set of aligners in order to continue the treatment without interruption.

6. Nail Filer and Baby Nail Clippers for Comfort

Warning: This isn’t recommended for those who are heavy-handed.

It’s easy for your gums to get sore after first using Invisalign. Not only are they not always accustomed to this new device, but sometimes extra plastic overhands rubs against the gums causing irritation.

If you’re currently dealing with this, it’s important that you schedule an appointment for a trim.

But if you don’t have time to come in for an appointment, you can try to file down the faulty area. Again, this is not recommended for those who are heavy-handed.

7. Use Your Cases

Even though these aligners are fairly durable, it’s still important that you put them in your case after use.

After becoming more comfortable with their Invisalign aligners, patients carelessly put them in their pockets or napkins to save time. Even though they are fairly sturdy, they are still pretty sensitive.

Also, keep in mind that you should not leave them in your car! Because of the material, they are prone to melting and aren’t made to endure high temperatures.

8. Find a Trusted Dentist

Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. There are plenty of orthodontists offering “sales” on Invisalign services that can result in ghastly costs in the long run.

Be sure to read the reviews and talk to other patients who have also gone through similar treatments. Invisalign is a phenomenal service when done right. That’s why finding the perfect Orthodontist is important.

9. Wearing Your Viveras

After you’ve gone through the full Invisalign treatment, it might be tempting to disregard any post-care.

Your dentist might recommend you wear some sort of retainer such as Viveras. These are usually formed from your last pair of aligners but are made of thicker material.

With Viveras, you’re usually recommended to wear them full-time for 6 months once you’re done with treatment and then switch to nighttime-only treatment.

Just like anything in the dental industry, there is a chance that these will wear down and you will eventually have to order another set. But if you insist on having metal retainers, you might want to keep in mind that sometimes teeth tend to shift with these kinds of retainers.
